UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE

UNIVERSITY OF STRATHCLYDE

Strathclyde is a great place to study and enjoy life at the same time. And this is where you can find out everything about us - from how we teach, to what's on in Glasgow and how to get around. From our foundation as a place of useful learning, we take it as our responsibility to research, teach and be of benefit to society – to reach outside the University to make the world better educated, prosperous, healthy, fair and secure. Our ambition is to be among the leading technological universities in the world. n 1796 our founder, Professor John Anderson, questioned the idea of what a university should be. To make education a vital force in people’s lives, he established "a place of useful learning" - a university whose purpose would be to work for "the public, for the good of mankind and the improvement of science". He believed that people and society could be improved by the application of reason and intellect, a belief still firmly maintained here. A practical man inspired by the radical ideas of the Scottish Enlightenment, Anderson challenged the medieval model of a university as a place apart. He made learning relevant to the new industrial age and available to men and women, regardless of class or creed. Anderson's ideal of useful learning still defines our purpose in, engineering, science, business and humanities and social science. It finds expression in our conviction that the University must play an essential role in public life, questioning convention and solving problems of significance to contemporary society. That we remain inspired by the ideal of useful learning is testament to its value.
